In Fall 2021, JDew was selected as a Riley Fellow through the Riley Institute’s Diversity Leaders Initiative (DLI), joining a distinguished cohort of Upstate Class XXX. Despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, JDew completed the program virtually, showing unwavering commitment to meaningful dialogue and systemic change in the areas of equity and inclusion. His involvement in the fellowship reaffirmed his dedication to fostering understanding and connection through storytelling, performance, and leadership.

As part of the DLI experience, JDew collaborated with other leaders in his class on a community action project called “IAAM Upstate Awareness.” The group focused on raising awareness in the Upstate region about the International African American Museum (IAAM) located in Charleston, South Carolina. The initiative sought to build bridges between communities and enhance historical understanding of the African American experience, a natural fit for JDew, whose own work through One Voice Show centers around bringing Black history to life.

The Riley Fellowship, facilitated by the Riley Institute at Furman University, invites leaders from across South Carolina’s corporate, nonprofit, governmental, and faith sectors to engage in a rigorous, nonpartisan program that deepens participants’ ability to drive positive social change. Admission is by nomination only and includes individuals recognized for their capacity to lead with purpose and influence. Fellows explore issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion through guided discussions, case studies, and collaborative projects over a five-month period.

Graduating as a Riley Fellow equips participants with a lifelong network of over 2,700 diverse leaders and practical tools for building inclusive communities and organizations. For JDew, the experience not only enriched his personal perspective but also expanded his platform as a performer, speaker, and advocate for truth and unity. His ongoing work continues to reflect the values championed by the fellowship: authentic dialogue, intentional collaboration, and a vision for a more inclusive South Carolina.
