When a Fundraiser Turns Up the Heat: Southern First Bank’s Hot Ones Challenge
At Southern First, where the pineapple stands tall,
We lend, save, serve, and apparently sweat through it all.
From Verdae to Laurens, Greenville knows our name,
But today it’s less banking and more intestinal flame…

That was the opening to a Hot Ones Challenge unlike any ordinary corporate event.
As part of Southern First Bank’s annual United Way of Greenville County fundraising campaign, the Hot Ones experience returned this year with a bigger format, a new level of competition, and plenty of heat.
And this time, there was a bracket.
16 Contestants. One Final Four.
The Hot Ones Challenge began with 16 Southern First Bank team members competing through a combination of trivia and eating challenges.
Each round brought contestants closer to the final four, where Chris, Austin, Ellis, and Marisa took their seats for the finale.
The room was ready.
The sauces were lined up.
And the host had a microphone, a fiery costume, and absolutely no idea how close he was to becoming a contestant himself.
The challenge wasn't just about who could handle the heat. It was about creating an experience that brought the team together while supporting something much bigger.

Turning a Fundraiser Into an Experience
Hosting a corporate event isn't always about standing behind a microphone and making announcements.
Sometimes it's about helping create the experience itself.
For this event, that meant working alongside Southern First Bank's team, the United Way of Greenville County, and a third-party AVL production team to bring the Hot Ones concept to life in front of the room.
There were trivia questions.
There were wings.
There were reactions that probably didn't need a microphone.
And, naturally, there were plenty of hot and steamy jokes.
The goal was simple: make the room want to participate.

Then Came Wing #8
Every Hot Ones challenge has a moment when the heat becomes real.
This was that moment.
The official Hot Ones lineup rates sauce #8 at an 8/10 heat level, with Carolina Reaper, Scorpion, and yellow super-hot chilis. It's the kind of sauce designed to make contestants question their life choices.
During the finale, Southern First added another twist.
A donation-based substitution gave contestant Austin the opportunity to pass on Wing #8.
The catch?
Someone else had to eat it.
That someone was JDew.
So the host stepped away from the microphone, picked up Wing #8, and took the challenge in front of the room.
It was hot.
Very hot.
And for a few moments, the person running the Hot Ones Challenge became part of the Hot Ones Challenge.

The Heat Had a Purpose
Behind all the wings, trivia, costumes, and jokes was the reason everyone was there.
Southern First Bank's campaign has raised more than $110,000 so far in support of United Way of Greenville County.
That figure represents the broader fundraising campaign taking place over several weeks, not money raised solely during the Hot Ones finale.
And that is what makes the experience meaningful.
The competition created energy.
The entertainment created engagement.
The fundraising created an impact.

More Than Hosting
One of the best parts of this work is getting to help create experiences people remember.
A great corporate event doesn't have to feel like another corporate event.
It can be competitive.
It can be funny.
It can be unexpected.
It can even involve a host voluntarily eating a very hot wing in front of a room full of people.
But underneath all of that, it should have a purpose.
For Southern First Bank and United Way of Greenville County, that purpose was helping strengthen the Greenville community.
So yes, there was sweating.
There was sniffling.
There was probably some regret.
And there was definitely Wing #8.
But there was also more than $110,000 raised for a meaningful cause.
That's a pretty good reason to turn up the heat.
Thank you to Southern First Bank, United Way of Greenville County, the fundraising committee, the contestants, and the AVL production team for trusting me to help bring this experience to life.
And to everyone who made it through the bracket:
Congratulations.
You survived the wings.
And somehow, so did I.
